Unesco Headquarters, Paris, France
Registration is now open for the ACE-UIA International Conference on Design Competitions, taking place on 25 October 2019, at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.
The conference is jointly organised by the Architects Council of Europe and the International Union of Architects. It is sponsored by the European Commission and has received the patronage of UNESCO.
Renowned French architect and planner, Dominique Perrault, will give a keynote speech at the event. Perrault gained international recognition after winning the competition for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in 1989, at the age of 36. His large and distinguished body of work includes the Velodrome and Olympic swimming pool of Berlin (1999); the extension of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg (2008); the campus of Ewha Women’s University in Seoul (2008- Korean Partner Baum Architects); and the Fukoku Tower in Osaka (2010).
The rest of the day will be dedicated to a series of three expert panels exploring the benefits and challenges of architectural competitions and how to promote high-quality outcomes.
London-based architect Stephan Reinke will moderate the panel discussions. Reinke has practiced in the international arena for over 20 years, with experience in Europe, the Middle East, North America and Asia. Among other achievements, he was Design Principal in Charge of the Cutlers Exchange in London, the Piccadilly Tower HS2 Regeneration Scheme in Manchester, Southern Cross in Melbourne and the Raffles Riverside Tower Hotel Complex in Moscow.
The conference will bring together architects, urban planners, the public sector and international organisations. The talks will provide an opportunity to explore the current norms of architecture competitions in different countries, with a particular focus on good competitive practice.
